Department of Aging Debuts Adult Day Services Listing

A Department of Aging update from AARP PA E-News for July 2010:

The PA Department of Aging website recently launched an online directory of adult day services centers. The directory allows consumers to locate some 250 centers by county and review the most recent state inspection reports for each facility.

Reviewing the web site should be part of a comprehensive plan for selecting an appropriate adult day center. For example, choosing an appropriate center should always include a personal visit, since offerings may vary from center to center. For a complete checklist on how to select an adult day services center, visit www.padsa.org/select.htm.

Create The Good by Improving Home Safety

A Create The Good update from AARP PA E-News for July 2010:

Create The Good is where good people connect with opportunities to help communities in whatever way works for them. Nothing could be simpler.

This month’s Home Safety Tips & Tools program was developed to help individuals and community groups make the homes of older family members, friends and neighbors safer and more comfortable. Create The Good makes it easy by providing a checklist of no-cost and low-cost fixes, some as simple as removing scatter or throw rugs or plugging in nightlights.

Visit CreateTheGood.org for more opportunities, tools and ideas to help improve your community.

Address Confidentiality Program

The Address Confidentiality Program (ACP) is administered by the Pennsylvania Office of the Victim Advocate (OVA) and provides an important service to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking.

The program has two basic parts. First, the ACP provides a substitute address for victims who have moved to a new location unknown to their perpetrator. The second part of the program provides participants with a free first-class confidential mail forwarding service.

The ACP is not for everyone. A victim service professional from a domestic violence, sexual assault or a victim service program can help determine if ACP is right for a victim as part of their safety plan.

For assistance call 800.563.6399 (TDD 877.349.1064) or visit www.paacp.state.pa.us.

National Volunteer Week

Celebrating People in Action

For more than two decades, Points of Light Institute has equipped nonprofit organizations to celebrate National Volunteer Week, providing visibility, thematic focus and resources to enable them to commemorate this signature week of volunteer recognition. In recent weeks, we have received significant feedback about the official dates for 2011. As a result, we have changed the dates: National Volunteer Week 2011 will take place April 10 - 16, 2011, in order to avoid conflicts with religious holidays.

Through programs such as the President's Volunteer Service Award, Daily Point of Light Award and the Extra Mile - Points of Light Volunteer Pathway, Points of Light Institute recognizes volunteers and the tremendous impact they are making on our country's most critical challenges year-round. To learn more about these recognition programs and how to nominate volunteers for awards, click here. To tell us about the impact volunteers are having in your community or through your organization, click here.

We will continue producing resource guides for recognizing volunteers and equipping organizations with the valuable tools they need to make their work successful. To access resources and more information about National Volunteer Week, click here.

If you have any questions about National Volunteer Week, please do not hesitate to contact Jennifer Geckler at (404) 979-2941 or JGeckler@PointsOfLight.org.

Insurance for Children and Adults

Highmark Blue Shield to help ensure that all Pennsylvania children and adults have access to affordable quality health care coverage. More than 310,600 children and 54,000 adults have received health care coverage through CHIP and adultBasic over the past 20 years.
Updated brochures and applications are now available for the CHIP and adultBasic programs. These programs reach families who are without health insurance because their income is too high for Medical Assistance or who do not have private insurance. Many families are not aware of their potential eligibility for enrollment in CHIP or adultBasic. In addition to these two state programs, Highmark Blue Shield also offers SpecialCare, an income-based program for adults and children.

People who do not qualify for income-based programs may benefit from an individual plan from Highmark Blue Shield. Information about Highmark individual health insurance programs is available at http://www.highmarkblueshield.com/.

The order form offers brochures about CHIP, adultBasic and SpecialCare as well as CHIP posters for your libraries. To get a copy of the Materials Request Form to order additional materials email Lisa at lisa.bellito@highmark.com or visit the website for more information about income-based programs. If you wish to order any of these materials for your patrons, please fill out the form and fax it to Lisa Bellito, Fax # - 610-573-5424. If your library is in a part of the state that does not have Highmark Blue Shield coverage, Lisa will see that your request is forwarded to the appropriate contact for your area.
