Save the Date - April 19th 2010

The Alzheimer's Association sent this save the date for their April 19th conference focusing on brain health. Looks like a great lineup! Local brain health expert Paul Nussbaum, Ph.D., is presenting the opening session “Brain Health across the Lifespan.” If you have never heard Dr. Nussbaum speak, I highly recommend him! The whole day conference is $75 for professionals and $25 for family caregivers.

New Information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and we want to call your attention to a new video and resource guide featured on Ask Medicare. The video tells one family's story, and highlights programs and resources that benefit and enhance a caregiver's well-being. In addition, the video and resource guide provide links to services available for caregivers and care recipients through the HHS Administration on Aging, HHS Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and other state and local programs. Please feel free to view the video and download the resource guide from the Ask Medicare website. Ask Medicare is CMS' website for caregivers. It is as easy as logging on to help a friend or family member choose a drug plan, compare nursing homes, get help with billing, find local resources, and more!

Special thanks to Monique Scott of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Claudia Koeing of the Office of Commonwealth Libraries for passing along this valuable information.

January Is National Mentoring Month

Once again it is National Mentoring Month and we wanted to celebrate with our community partners at the Mentoring Partnership of SW PA.

May be of interest to patrons looking for volunteer opportunities in their area:
There are almost 1000 young people on a waiting list for a mentor. We need volunteers who will spend time with a young person. SHARE WHAT YOU KNOW!

Through the Mentoring Partnership of SW PA volunteers will have the opportunity to provide a young person with quality mentoring. Training is provided that is tailored to the program the volunteer will be involved with during their mentoring experience. The programs are open to all those who wish to make an impact on a young person's life and the Mentoring Partnership of SW PA will work around your schedule to provide the best possible mentoring opportunities.

Mentoring Partnership of SW PA has many valuable resources for mentors to educate themselves on the mentoring occurring in their area, as well as success stories and functions taking place in South Western Pennsylvania. Check out this site or call 412-281-2535 to learn even more about how to become a mentor.

Happy Mentoring Month!
